Monday the 18th was TAX DAY--no way I was getting out of work that day. So, we decided to spend the night at home and set out early Tuesday morning. (And by "early" I mean 3am. And by "we decided" I mean Bill came up with that idea.)
But we made it to our first stop right in time for the doors to open at 6am.
212 mi - POPS SODA SHOP - ARCADIA, OK
I don't drink soda very often, but I was so excited about this place. We left with 12 bottles of sodas we'd never tasted before. Yum!
361 mi - MCDONALDS - WICHITA, KS
Now, as we were packing we checked the weather forecast for Utah and were not excited about the 50-60 degree weather. We'd been enjoying life in the 80s for the last few weeks in Texas. But we were totally unprepared for the 40 degree weather that hit us in Wichita, KS. We only stopped for a bathroom break, but ended up breaking one of our cardinal road trip rules: No food from places we have at home. We got ourselves some nice, warm Egg McMuffins. Go ahead, judge us. We were cold!
629 mi - BUFFALO BILL MONUMENT - OAKLEY, KS
We stopped for another bathroom break at a truck stop near Oakley, KS and took a little time to visit the totally rad Buffalo Bill Monument. PS There were patches of snow on the ground. And lots of dried up corn husks.
853 mi - BRYCE & TARA'S HOUSE - COLORADO SPRINGS, CO
Just a few weeks before our trip, Bill got a call from his long-time buddy, Bryce. Turns out Bryce lives in Colorado these days, so we invited ourselves over for a visit! I'd only ever heard Bryce on the phone before, it was so fun to actually meet him and Tara and their sweet little family. We really enjoyed our stay with them. We enjoyed it so much, we forgot to take our camera out of the car. Darnit!
1309 mi - LITTLE AMERICA - LITTLE AMERICA, WY
Once upon a time, when Bill was a little kid, his family lived in Riverton, WY. We didn't have time to drive out that far, but we did stop by this cute outpost that he remembers visiting back in the day. It is a whole complex of hotel, restaurant, gas station, gift shop, playground etc. It was apparently built back in the 1920s by a man that had once been caught in a blizzard on the Wyoming plains with no shelter to turn to. So he built Little America. Home of the 50 cent ice cream cone. So, we enjoyed the restrooms and the ice cream and went on our way.
1458 mi - HILARY'S HOUSE - SALT LAKE CITY, UT
My former roomate, Hilary offered us a place to stay for our trip. Right now she's living in an adorable old house in SLC. Later in the week, we even got to meet up with Effie and C.C. who had also lived with us back in our BYU days. And C.C. spent the night at Hilary's too.

We thought a nice graduation gift to Robert and Tamara would be a new set of family pictures. Since they just had their fourth child and so much family was planning to be in town. There was some last-minute panicking about the weather, etc. but I think they'll turn out very well.
1495 mi - HILARY'S PARENT'S HOUSE - OREM, UT
This house is insane. Let me just say that. And Hilary invited us to stay here for a night because in her words, "it's an experience." Plus, her parents were out of town that night.

The main event of our roadtrip was Bill's older brother's graduation from BYU. He and his wife are also both graduating from UVU this semester. Plus, they scheduled their baby blessing to coincide with all of us being in town.
1894 mi - NEIL & JUDY'S HOUSE - HENDERSON, NV
We wanted to stop in and see Neil and Judy of course. Neil is another very long-standing friend of my husband. We got to meet them last summer on our trip to Las Vegas, but it was nice of them to let us crash there for the night!

We've been huge fans of the tv show Man vs Food for years now, and so we HAD to visit the iconic restaurant in Amarillo--home of the 72 oz steak dinner challenge!

A few miles down the road from our steak dinner...we decided we needed sleep! now! So we got a room in this tiny town. And a free continental breakfast, too!
