I wish I could find this quote for you. I came across it some time ago in a collection of short stories by 20-somethings. It was written by Pamela Ribon, of the blog Pamie.com. And she is talking about the very beginnings of blog culture. The blog culture that has become so mainstream that...here I am.
But she compared posting blogs to sending forth messages in bottles. We hope that someone will hear us. We hope that someone is listening. We hope that someone cares to learn a thing or two about the view from our personal island, be it desert or tropical.
Or maybe we haven't made it to land. Maybe some of us are completely at sea. We watch the stars by night and hope that we're drifting on some blessed course. We write our messages by day and hope that someone, somewhere is seeking out our little speck in the wide, wide water.
And maybe its not just blogging. Maybe it's everything. Every text message conversation, every photo comment, every party and every prayer. We are so small. And we hope so much. We reach out our hands daily. Isn't it monumental the feeling of being found? Even if only for a few moments.
