Our No Air Conditioning Weekend

Saturday was a busy day for us--so much to do in our new little house! Bill took his dog swimming and then gave her a good bath at his parent's house. He also did his duty mowing the lawn. And then we decided to get painting! We invited my parents over to help. One of my mom's favorite things to do in the world is paint the walls of the house in new colors. She's pretty much an expert and has a lot of the gear for it.

Bill and Dad quickly lost interest in the painting and left Mom and I to do it while they went off to fix stuff. They fixed some loose light fixtures, examined a few of the major appliances, and set about trading out the old school thermostat with a programmable electronic one. The same one we had swapped out in our apartment--resulting in noticeably lower electric bills. But I guess this A/C system is a tad more complicated than the one at the apartment.

The air conditioner stopped working. Entirely.

We called our home warranty people and they wouldn't even consider sending out a technician until Monday. Okay. Luckily, the sun would be going down soon and--although we've had highs up in the triple digits for the last few weeks--at night it cools down into the mid-90s. So, no big deal, right?

Right. We couldn't wait to get to church in the morning. And I told Bill to call his mom to see if we could spend the night with her because there was no way I could do that again. Cheri was so nice and let us stay with her. So after church, we packed up a duffel bag of clothes and what we had planned to make for dinner, took the dog, and made a run for it over to Bill's parent's house.

And it was lovely. Honestly, I felt spoiled. We were treated to air conditioning, down pillows, satellite tv, our own bathroom, cereal for breakfast. I was having a great time. And when the technician said he wasn't going to come out until Tuesday, I was happy to stay another night.

Skye, we noticed, was not having such a great time. She's 14--which is suuuper old for a golden retriever. Sometimes when we treat her to a trip to the park or a long walk, she forgets she's not a puppy anymore, runs around, and can be pretty stiff the next day. She was really struggling this time.

Luckily, the vet lives next door to Bill's parents. He came over Monday night. He agreed that it was just sore muscles. So, as he was prescribing some pain relievers, Bill mentioned the circumstances leading up to our staying with Cheri for the weekend. Turns out, the vet had just had the same trouble! He had tried to install an electronic thermostat and ended up having to call out a technician. He said that one of the wires that connects to the analog thermostat can't be hooked up to an electronic one, and doing so blew an in-line fuse. He even told Bill where to look for said fuse. So Bill drove off to the house, found the blown fuse and got a replacement at AutoZone. As soon as he replaced it, the A/C kicked back on! Hallelujah!

We still spent the night with Cheri, but the next day we were able to come home to a much more livable house.
